The Story
Written and Directed by Lance Pickett, Unlocked is a unique American Sign Language film that takes place in a small city where a young deaf psychologist, Sandra, pursues her dreams in helping others with mental health needs. With the help of her friend and mentor, Alice, and assistant, Sam, Sandra starts her own clinic and attracts four challenging patients who are also deaf, each with their own enigma: Matt, a married man with a sexual addiction; Doris, a mother of two with severe depression; Carla, a teenager from a dysfunctional family; and Lori, a mysterious patient Sandra struggles to understand.

As Sandra tries to unravel the riddles of her patient’s minds, a patient wounds up dead and Sandra stumbles upon a plot that frames her as the killer. Unable to trust anyone, including her own patients, Sandra must unlock the mysteries of her patient’s death and prove her innocence while maintaining her professionalism as a psychiatrist, an employer, and as a student and friend to her mentor.

This film will be performed entirely in American Sign Language and will be created by a crew of active members of the Deaf community. Production will begin fall 2011 and theatrical release is planned for spring 2012.

Why this film matters
American Sign Language (ASL) is the 4th most learned language in the Unites States. Why? Because it is a beautiful language and the culture behind it must be shared and exposed to the world. It is estimated that there are 26 million americans with a hearing loss – many struggling to fit into a world where music and speech is prevalent. It is our goal to combine the two worlds, sound and visual communication into this beautiful and compelling story.
